INQUEST Charitable Trust founded
INQUEST Charitable Trust (ICT) is a registered charity (number 1046650) and was founded in 1995 as a sister organisation to INQUEST.
It was set up to build upon INQUEST’s long history of providing support and information to the bereaved facing an inquest, fulfilling its charitable aims by seeking funding for casework provision.
As part of a management agreement adopted during 1998, the ICT made a quarterly grant to INQUEST towards the costs of the Casework Team, which was made up of the ICT’s Caseworker and INQUEST’s Co-Directors.
The objective of ICT is to research, publish and disseminate information concerning sudden or unexplained deaths or deaths which are or may be the subject of a coroner’s inquest.
In 1998 a Family Fund was set up by the ICT to help with:
- Travel to inquests for family members
- Childcare costs
- Expert reports and the provision of a second post-mortem where necessary
- Legal representation – members of the INQUEST Lawyers Group represent families for free or for minimal costs, but expenses for travel outside London, for example, can be considerable
- INQUEST volunteers to attend inquests with families and to record proceedings.
