Inquest into the Marchioness disaster begins
Over five years after the death of 51 people, an inquest into the Marchioness Disaster in 1989 began.
Prior to this, bereaved families and survivors banded together to form the Marchioness Action Group (MAG). The purpose of MAG was to find out the truth of what happened and fight for justice.
As soon at the disaster happened, Terry Munyard and Louise Christian, lawyers who also helped to set up INQUEST, supported the families and survivors.
There was no access to legal aid for inquests, so they provided their legal services pro bono for several years.
The MAG complained about the government's handling of the disaster and pleaded for exceptional case funding, which they were granted thanks for their persistent campaigning.
Ian Philpott of the MAG wrote:
I speak for the dead, the families left behind to pick up the pieces, the survivors and the country when I say that we feel let down by the establishment and in particular this government.
